Kids and Tween Summer Reading 2019 - A Universe of Stories

2019 Summer Reading Program for Kids and Tweens

What is the Summer Reading Program?

The Summer Reading program is your library’s way to prevent the summer slide by encouraging reading for fun over the summer! We do this by offering fun and educational programs at each of our ten library locations and by awarding prizes for reaching two different reading milestones.

As a bonus, receive a $10 Fine Forgiveness Voucher just for signing up!

When is Summer Reading?

The Summer Reading program starts on the last day of school and ends on the first day of school. All performances and branch programs will take place in June and July.

What is the summer slide?

If you picture a playground slide, at the end of the school year your child is at the very top. They’ve done all they could this school year and have learned very important reading skills. If your child’s brain doesn’t get the practice it needs to keep those skills strong, they steadily creep down the slide and much of what they’ve learned is lost by the end of the summer.

By reading over the summer, children not only keep their existing skills up, but become even stronger students ready to learn the next school year.

What ages can participate?

The Summer Reading program is for babies to rising 6th graders. Reading is just as important for children not yet enrolled in a formal educational setting. In fact, 80% of brain growth happens in the first three years after birth. Our library strives to prepare all children in Spartanburg for kindergarten. Did you know kindergarten readiness is indicative of future success far beyond your child’s school years? By reading to your child you are enriching their world for the rest of their life.

How do we get started?

Here are three things you can do:

Option 1: Beginning the last day of school, stop by any Spartanburg County Public Libraries location to sign up and receive your reading record. (No library card required.)

Option 2: Sign up in your school media center.

Option 3: Sign up online and print your reading record OR sign up and track your reading online.

What sort of programs do you offer over the summer?

Along with our usual Storytime Schedule, the library also creates unique and engaging programs. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories, so if your child is interested in science and technology, this is a great year to learn about outer space! Check out our Kids and Tweens Program Calendar for more information.

You can enter your name into a raffle for each program you attend over the summer. A ticket will be pulled at the end of the summer for your chance to win a backpack filled with school supplies!
